The perinatal society was established in 2001 from small beginning at the Family Health Bureau, Professor Indrajee Amarasinghe was the founder president. Current president is Dr. Kapila Jayaratne. Membership is unique as it includes obstetricians, neonatologists, pediatricians with an interest in neonatology and community physicians.

The objectives of the society are promoting maternal, fetal and neonatal wellbeing, advancing the theory and practice of perinatology, encouraging training and research, providing expert advice to government and other bodies on matters pertaining to perinatology. Further to maintain liaison with other organization of professional involved in perinatology both in Sri Lanka and internationally.

The 16th Annual Scientific Congress and The Annual Academic Session of PSSL was held on 24th August 2017 with workshops, followed by Pre-Congress and Inauguration on 23rd August 2017 at Galadari. A wide array of plenary talks by local and international experts and two innovative sessions on perinatal deaths and meconium aspiration will be on the spotlight. The session will be on the spotlight. The session was provided a platform to transfer new knowledge and identify potential areas for further research.
